Neurologists and Epileptologists
Neurologists and Epileptologists are vital to the health and well being of people living with epilepsy. In most cases, they are the sole resource available to people experiencing epilepsy and their families. This is because they are the only ones who truly understand what is happening when a seizure takes place, and the best way to respond. The lack of community knowledge about epilepsy is also due to the huge stigma affiliated with losing control of your body while experiencing a seizure.
Empowering Epilepsy’s mission is to help anyone who is experiencing epilepsy outside of the neurologist’s office to find ways to live well with epilepsy in Cleveland and Northeastern Ohio. Since epilepsy affects the ability to successfully complete many tasks, whether it be an effect of the seizures or side effects of medication, outside resources need to be actively provided to patients so they can meet others experiencing epilepsy, find ways to manage their seizures, and realize they are not alone.
Neurologists can help by referring patients to Empowering Epilepsy. Empowering Epilepsy will provide your patients with free, confidential support groups for anyone who understand epilepsy. Our support groups include an hour of talk time and an hour of free Empowering Epilepsy Restorative Yoga. We also hold an array of events to increase epilepsy awareness or bring people who understand epilepsy together that are either free of charge, or take place at a minimal cost, including our Purple Day® Party in March, our Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Team in May, our Golf Outing in August, our Pottery Painting Parties in November, and an Empower Your Life Conference. We also provide over 200 gift bags annually to patients staying in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit of 4 local hospitals to help make their stay more enjoyable during their multi-day EEG.
If you know of any patients in Northeastern Ohio that would benefit from these events and services, please send them to our website, share the email address email@example.com for them to contact us, or invite them to join our newsletter, Facebook page or Twitter Page at www.facebook.com/empoweringepilepsy and www.twitter.com/empepilepsy.
For neurologists working with patients in the Cleveland area, we hold our Empowering Epilepsy Support Groups in Beachwood, Parma and Westlake. The support group and yoga is free and is open to anyone who understands epilepsy.
For neurologists working with patients in the Akron area, we hold our Akron Epilepsy Support Group monthly at the Fairlawn Kiwanis Community Center at 3486 South Smith Road in Fairlawn, Ohio.
Our goal is to allow people with epilepsy and their families to meet others who understand epilepsy, learn strategies to manage seizures, and help people with epilepsy realize they are not alone.
